This case study presents the storefront signage for a vintage romantic café overflowing with old-world charm and ambience. The design embraces ornate Victorian and Belle Époque influences, creating a sign system that transports customers to a bygone era of elegance and romance. Every element is curated to support the café’s promise of a leisurely, enchanting dining experience.
Design Concept
The romantic vintage concept draws from classic European café culture—the grand cafés of Vienna, Paris, and Prague. The primary signage uses an ornate serif typeface with decorative flourishes and swashes, reminiscent of hand-painted turn-of-the-century signage. The brand mark incorporates botanical motifs—roses and ivy—rendered in a detailed line-art style that suggests antique etching. The color palette uses deep burgundy, aged gold, and cream, creating a rich, warm visual temperature that feels instantly nostalgic.
The facade layout features the primary name in a curved arch above the entrance, with secondary panels flanking the door displaying the café’s specialties. A vintage-style hanging lantern provides both illumination and period atmosphere.
Material & Fabrication
The primary signage uses gold leaf applied to a deep burgundy painted background on a wood substrate, following traditional sign-painting techniques. The gold leaf catches ambient light differently throughout the day, creating a luminous quality that cannot be replicated by printed materials. The secondary panels use routed and painted HDU with raised lettering in multiple colors, with clear coat protection for outdoor durability.
The hanging lantern is fabricated from aged brass with etched glass panels, housing a warm LED flame-effect bulb. Window graphics use gold metallic vinyl in decorative scroll patterns, providing privacy while maintaining the vintage aesthetic. The overall material selection prioritizes authentic period-appropriate finishes over modern alternatives.
