Project Background
Westside Automotive, a family-owned auto repair shop on Denver’s west side, had been operating for 12 years with a faded plywood sign that was illegible from the adjacent I-25 frontage road. With new competition opening across the street (a national chain), the owner needed a sign upgrade that communicated reliability, experience, and professionalism — and most importantly, could be read by drivers passing at 45 mph.
Design Concept
We designed a two-part signage system. The primary sign — 8-foot-wide illuminated channel letters reading “WESTSIDE AUTO” — is mounted on the building parapet in bold red acrylic-faced aluminum letters with yellow LED halo illumination. Red and yellow were chosen for maximum visibility and the automotive industry association.
The secondary monument sign at the driveway entrance uses a polished stainless steel base with the shop’s logo laser-cut and backlit, plus a changeable message panel for specials (“Oil Change 9.99”, “Winter Tire Check”). The monument is anchored with a concrete footing rated for Colorado winter freeze-thaw cycles.
Challenges & Solutions
Challenge 1: Highway-speed readability. At 45 mph, drivers need 12-inch minimum letter height for readability. Solution: 14-inch letter height with high-contrast red/yellow color combination — one of the most legible combinations for automotive signage.
Challenge 2: Monument sign wind load. Colorado front range experiences 60+ mph gusts. Solution: Wind-rated structural engineering with reinforced steel internal frame and deep concrete footing.
Challenge 3: Oil/grease exposure. Automotive environment means airborne hydrocarbons. Solution: Stainless steel monument base resists chemical staining; aluminum letters have a clear anodized protective coating.

Results
The owner reported a 30% increase in drive-in customers within the first month. The monument sign’s changeable message panel has been particularly effective — the “Winter Tire Check” special brought in 47 cars in its first week. “I should have done this five years ago,” the owner told us.
