Black Thorn Tattoo, a high-end custom tattoo studio opening in Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighborhood, needed a storefront sign that communicated their brand: dark, premium, and unapologetically bold. Unlike many walk-in tattoo shops, Black Thorn operates by appointment only for custom work, with rates starting at 50/hour. The signage needed to attract the right clientele while maintaining privacy for artists working inside.
Design Concept
The primary sign uses black powder-coated aluminum channel letters in a custom-modified gothic typeface — “BLACK THORN TATTOO” spans the upper storefront. The letters are non-illuminated (front-facing only) during the day, with subtle warm white backlighting that activates after sunset, creating a halo effect against the dark brick.
The centerpiece is a large custom red LED neon sign in the window featuring the studio’s logo — a thorny rose entwined with a dagger, rendered in 10mm red LED flex tubing on a black acrylic backing. The neon is visible from the street but positioned to avoid direct sightlines into the studio, preserving artist and client privacy.
The lower window uses black perforated window film (70% opacity) with the studio’s tagline “Custom Fine Line & Traditional Tattooing” in reverse-etched white lettering. The film provides daytime privacy while the perforations allow those inside to see out.
Challenges & Solutions
Challenge 1: Balancing visibility with privacy. Tattoo clients value discretion, but the business needs street presence. Solution: Perforated window film with strategic neon placement — visible from sidewalk, no direct sightline into workstations.
Challenge 2: Bushwick’s competitive street art environment. The sign needs to compete with murals and graffiti. Solution: The red neon’s warm glow and the dimensional gothic letters create a premium look that stands apart from the surrounding street art.
Challenge 3: NYC DOB permitting for projecting sign elements. Solution: All signage is flush-mounted with zero projection beyond the building envelope.
