UL Listed Channel Letters: UL 48 vs ETL Certification

October 26, 2026

UL/ETL isn’t optional — it’s the difference between “approved” and “red-tagged.” Inspector sees the label → signs permit. No label → red tag, power cut, $500–$5,000/day fines. Insurance: non-listed sign = claim denied after fire. Landlord lease: “all signage UL listed” = standard clause. We ship every sign labeled, factory-wired, inspection-ready.

UL/ETL Isn’t Optional — It’s the Difference Between “Approved” and “Red-Tagged”

We’ve seen $50K signs sit dark for months because the fabricator skipped the listing. The inspector doesn’t care about your grand opening date. They care about the label. Every Y SIGNS channel letter ships with a UL 48 or ETL 48 label on the raceway or letter back — factory-wired, field-ready, inspection-passing.

UL vs ETL — Same Standard, Different Lab

  • UL (Underwriters Laboratories): original, most recognized by AHJs
  • ETL (Intertek): same NEC/UL standards, often faster/cheaper listing
  • AHJ acceptance: 99% treat them identically (both NRTLs — Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories)
  • We use both: ETL for speed, UL for specifiers who require it

The Standards That Matter

Standard Covers Why It Matters
UL 48 / ETL 48 Electric signs (construction, wiring, materials) Primary listing for channel letters
UL 8750 / ETL 8750 LED equipment (modules, drivers) Component-level safety
UL 2108 Low-voltage lighting systems Class 2 power supplies
NEC Article 600 Field installation (wiring, disconnect, grounding) Inspector’s field checklist
UL 94 Flammability (plastic materials) Acrylic face, LED lenses
UL 1598 Luminaires (if sign doubles as lighting) Rare for channel letters

What Gets Labeled — Factory vs Field

Factory-labeled (ours): complete sign — face, returns, back, LEDs, driver, wiring, disconnect — all UL 48 listed as a SYSTEM.

Field-labeled (competitors/cheap): components listed, but assembly NOT listed → inspector must field-evaluate (expensive, risky).

Hybrid: UL 8750 modules + UL 48 sign body + field wiring → still needs field evaluation for final assembly.

The 7 Things an Inspector Checks (NEC 600 Checklist)

  1. UL/ETL label on sign body (visible, legible, permanent)
  2. Disconnect: within sight, lockable, marked “SIGN” (raceway = built-in)
  3. Dedicated circuit: 20A typical, GFCI NOT required (NEC 600.5)
  4. Grounding: equipment grounding conductor to sign frame
  5. Conduit/seal: listed fittings, wet-location rated if exterior
  6. Clearance: 12″ from combustibles, 3 ft from windows/doors (varies)
  7. Wind/seismic: engineered stamps for ASCE 7 (we provide)

Common Red-Tag Triggers (And How We Avoid Them)

  • ❌ No label → we label every sign at factory
  • ❌ Field-wired driver outside raceway → our driver inside raceway or listed enclosure
  • ❌ Non-listed LED modules → we use UL 8750 / ETL 8750 modules only
  • ❌ Wrong wire gauge (18 AWG for 20A circuit) → we use 12 AWG THHN minimum
  • ❌ Missing disconnect → raceway includes lockable disconnect
  • ❌ Improper grounding → factory-grounded frame, lug provided
  • ❌ Combustible clearance violation → we engineer standoffs per NEC 600.9

Title 24 / IECC / Energy Code Compliance

  • CA Title 24: dimmer + timer + photocell REQUIRED for all exterior signs
  • IECC 2021/2024: automatic shutoff (timer/photocell) + dimming capability
  • We ship: 0–10V dimmable driver + astronomic timer + photocell (raceway) or remote (flush)
  • Documentation: compliance certificate included in permit package

Multi-Site Rollout: One Listing, Fifty Signs

  • Master listing: one UL 48 file covers identical design across unlimited locations
  • Variations allowed: cap height ±10%, color, mount (raceway/flush) — same file
  • We manage: file maintenance, variation tracking, annual surveillance audit
  • New design = new file (we handle — 4–6 weeks for new listing)

Retrofit & Legacy Signs: Can You List an Existing Sign?

  • Field Labeling (UL 9990 / ETL Field Evaluation): inspector evaluates on-site
  • Cost: $2,000–$5,000 per sign + travel + corrections
  • Better: replace with new listed sign (warranty, efficiency, aesthetics)
  • We offer: retrofit LED modules (UL 8750) for existing returns — extends life, keeps listed status

Your Permit Package — What We Deliver

  • Shop drawings (scaled, stamped by state PE)
  • UL/ETL file number + label photo
  • Wind load calculations (ASCE 7, stamped)
  • Electrical load calculations (NEC 220)
  • Mounting details + anchor schedule
  • Energy compliance certificate (Title 24, IECC)
  • Disconnect specification + location
  • Grounding diagram

Specifying UL/ETL in Your RFP / Brand Standards

  • “All channel letters shall bear UL 48 or ETL 48 listing as a complete system”
  • “LED modules: UL 8750 / ETL 8750 listed”
  • “Driver: UL 8750 / ETL 8750, 0–10V dimmable, Class 2”
  • “Factory-wired, labeled, inspection-ready — no field evaluation required”
