Laundromat Signage Design Case: Bubbles & Dry Cleaning Co.

Miami, FL

Bubbles & Dry Cleaning Co., a new self-service laundromat with full-service dry cleaning in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood, needed a sign visible from the busy Calle Ocho corridor. The owners wanted to break away from the tired laundromat stereotype — no faded blues or generic washing machine clip art. They wanted something bright, clean, and slightly playful that would stand out to both residents and tourists walking to nearby restaurants.

Design Concept

The main sign is a large illuminated lightbox (10 feet wide) in glossy white acrylic, internally lit with daylight-balanced LEDs (5000K for a crisp clean look). The lightbox features the business name in large cut-out dimensional HDU letters in a custom rounded typeface — the “O” in “BUBBLES” is replaced with a circular cutout revealing a blue acrylic bubble graphic inside.

The dimensional letters are painted in a soft sky blue and white gradient, with the word “BUBBLES” in a larger playful font and “Dry Cleaning Co.” in a smaller refined sans-serif below. The letters are mounted on standoffs 1.5 inches from the lightbox face, creating a shadow that adds depth.

Window graphics on three large storefront windows feature stylized soap bubble illustrations in translucent blue and white vinyl. The center window has the tagline “Wash. Dry. Fold. Done.” in large vinyl lettering readable from across the street.

Challenges & Solutions

Challenge 1: High humidity and heat. Miami’s coastal humidity and direct sun exposure degrade standard acrylic and vinyl quickly. Solution: Marine-grade acrylic with UV-stabilized coating; vinyl window graphics use cast vinyl with a 7-year outdoor rating and anti-fungal backing.

Challenge 2: Bright sun washing out illuminated signs. In Miami’s intense sunlight, many lit signs look dim during the day. Solution: High-output LEDs (1800 lumens per square foot) with automatic daylight sensor that boosts brightness during peak sun hours.

Challenge 3: Hurricane resistance. South Florida building codes require signs to withstand 175 mph winds. Solution: All components are wind-rated to Miami-Dade County standards with stainless steel through-bolts into concrete lintels, not surface anchors.

Results

The laundromat opened with a 50% higher first-month customer count than the owners’ financial projections. Multiple customers mentioned they “stopped because the sign was so clean and bright.” The bubble window graphics became an unexpected hit with children — the owners added a small “photo op” sign inviting customers to take photos with the bubble window, generating organic social media content.
