A Parisian-Inspired Bakery Sign for Golden Crust San Francisco Marina District

Golden Crust Bakery wanted a storefront that transported customers to a Parisian pâtisserie. Hand-painted gold leaf window lettering, a navy striped awning, and cream-and-blue color palette — elegance that sells croissants before you taste one.

Project Background

Golden Crust is an artisan bakery in San Francisco’s Marina District, founded by a pastry chef who trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. She wanted the storefront to evoke the patisseries of the 6th arrondissement — elegant, timeless, and unmistakably French.

Design Concept & Branding

Three elements combine: a hand-painted gold leaf sign on the window transom, a navy-and-cream striped awning, and elegantly scripted window lettering. The transom sign reads “Golden Crust – Est. 2023” in custom script with hand-applied 23k gold leaf. A subtle wheat sheaf motif in gold leaf accents each end of the transom.

Material Selection & Fabrication

Genuine 23k loose leaf gold, applied over hand-cut stencils with traditional gesso and sizing. Window lettering uses premium matte enamel applied by brush, not vinyl. The awning is solution-dyed Sunbrella acrylic fabric, tension-fitted on a custom aluminum frame.

Installation Process

Gold leaf application took four days — stencil cutting, gesso base, sizing applied at 98F for proper tack, and leaf application. The awning installation required structural reinforcement. Total timeline was 3.5 weeks.

Results & Impact

The bakery had a line of 30+ people on opening day. The gold leaf sign has become the bakery’s logo, appearing on packaging and merchandise. Average daily foot traffic exceeds 400 customers.
