The Velvet Rack, a high-end women’s boutique on Los Angeles’ iconic Melrose Avenue, needed a storefront sign that matched its curated collection of designer pieces. The result — a black-and-gold channel letter ensemble that commands attention day and night.
Project Background
The Velvet Rack opened its doors on a premium stretch of Melrose Avenue known for high-end fashion destinations. The founder, a former fashion buyer with 15 years of industry experience, wanted the storefront to telegraph luxury before customers even stepped inside. “Melrose shoppers have sophisticated taste — our sign needed to communicate that we speak their language before they read a single price tag,” she explained. The budget prioritized premium materials: solid brass lettering, hand-applied gold leaf accents, and custom LED backlighting engineered to cast a warm glow without harsh hotspots.
Design Concept & Branding
The design pivots on a black-and-gold palette that mirrors the boutique’s interior. Custom sans-serif channel letters were fabricated in matte black acrylic with polished brass faces — a subtle two-tone effect that catches daylight differently from every angle. At night, warm 2700K LEDs backlight the letters, creating a soft halo on the dark textured wall behind. A discrete gold-leaf emblem — a stylized velvet ribbon — was added above the main lettering as a brand signature. The typography was custom-drawn to balance elegant proportions with strong readability from 50 feet away.
Material Selection & Fabrication
Each letter was CNC-cut from 3/8″ acrylic, then hand-finished with automotive-grade matte black paint. The brass faces were laser-cut, polished, and clear-coated to prevent tarnishing. The LED system uses waterproof SMD modules rated for 50,000 hours, mounted on aluminum heat-dissipation trays. The entire assembly weighs 42 lbs and was reinforced with a hidden steel backing plate. The gold-leaf ribbon emblem is 23k gold leaf applied by hand over a gesso base — a craft technique that gives the emblem depth impossible to achieve with paint or vinyl.
Installation Process
The installation required specialized anchoring into a historic building’s brick facade. Our team used a laser level to align the letters within 1/16″ tolerance across a 14-foot span. The electrical work involved tapping into the building’s existing canopy circuit and installing a dedicated GFCI-protected line for the LED driver. Total installation time was two days — one for template mounting and anchor drilling, one for final letter installation and calibration. A dusk-to-dawn photocell was added to automate the lighting schedule.
Results & Impact
Within the first month, foot traffic increased 34% compared to the previous tenant’s average, and the store reported that walk-in customers frequently mention the sign as the reason they stopped. “People take photos of it for Instagram. Our sign has become a Melrose Avenue micro-landmark,” the owner says. The gold-leaf emblem has become The Velvet Rack’s most recognizable brand asset — it now appears on shopping bags, tags, and social media profiles.
