Paws & Claws Animal Hospital, a full-service veterinary practice in Raleigh’s rapidly growing Brier Creek area, needed signage that balanced professional medical credibility with the warmth and compassion pet owners expect. The practice treats dogs, cats, and small mammals — the sign needed to appeal to both the human decision-makers and signal a safe environment for their pets.
Design Concept
The primary sign uses brushed stainless steel dimensional letters mounted on a warm taupe metal panel band — “PAWS & CLAWS ANIMAL HOSPITAL” in a clean rounded sans-serif. Stainless steel was chosen for its medical-grade association and ease of cleaning in a veterinary environment.
The signature element is a backlit acrylic lightbox in the shape of a paw print, mounted beside the practice name. Soft warm white LED illumination (3000K) creates an inviting glow. The paw print shape immediately communicates “pet care” before anyone reads the text.
At street level, UV-printed window decals feature friendly illustrations of a cat, dog, and rabbit with the tagline “Compassionate Care for Every Companion.” A small window plaque reads “Fear-Free Certified” — a credential that anxious pet owners actively look for.
Challenges & Solutions
Challenge 1: Soothing anxious pets (and owners). The waiting area is visible from the sidewalk. Solution: Frosted window film with decal-only coverage — preserves natural light while softening the view of the waiting room.
Challenge 2: HOA restrictions on sign brightness. The shopping center has strict illumination limits. Solution: Low-glare LED backlighting with a dimmer that automatically reduces brightness by 30% after business hours.
Challenge 3: Multiple services to communicate. General practice, dental, surgery, boarding. Solution: A separate backlit directory panel (36″ × 12″) listing services in priority order, mounted below the primary sign.

Results
The practice reported that the paw print lightbox is mentioned by nearly every new client during their first visit. “It made us feel like you really care about animals, not just medicine,” one client commented. The Fear-Free Certified window plaque was specifically noted by three new clients who chose the practice over a competitor.
