Petals & Buds, a charming florist in Charleston’s historic French Quarter, wanted signage that felt romantic, handcrafted, and in keeping with the district’s historic character. The result—a hand-painted wooden sign featuring botanical illustrations that evoke the freshness of flowers.
Project Background
Charleston’s French Quarter imposes strict historical preservation standards for exterior signage. Petals & Buds needed to comply with these regulations while still creating a distinctive identity that would attract customers walking along cobblestone streets. The owner sought something “that looked like it belonged in a storybook”—fitting for a florist specializing in arrangements for weddings and special occasions.
Design Concept & Branding
The design leans into traditional sign-painting techniques passed down through generations. Floral illustrations of roses, lilies, and sprigs appear alongside the lettering in soft pastel pinks and greens on a creamy off-white background. The calligraphic spelling of the business name mimics handwriting, adding a personal touch that distinguishes it from stamped or printed alternatives.
The overall effect evokes the feeling of walking past a flower-covered cottage—an emotional response aligned perfectly with the florist’s offerings.
Material Selection & Fabrication
Board: Pressure-treated pine sealed for exterior use
Paint: Exterior-grade acrylic paints formulated to resist fading from southern sun exposure
Varnish: UV-protective marine varnish applied in multiple coats
Hanging: Heavy-duty wrought iron brackets with authentic finish
Installation Process
Historical commission approval was required prior to any fabrication. Once approved, the sign was constructed off-site with careful adherence to approved dimensions and color palettes. On-site installation used minimal impact methods to preserve the cobblestone streets below. Wrought iron brackets anchored securely into masonry using reversible methods compliant with preservation standards.
Results & Impact
The sign doubles as an Instagram-worthy photo opportunity, with numerous customer photos tagging the location on social platforms. Local tourism guides feature Petals & Buds as one of the French Quarter’s most picturesque spots—a powerful indirect marketing benefit driven by the signage itself.
