This case study explores interior signage and decorative lighting design for a residential space featuring a breathtaking starry ceiling installation. The project applies signage and lighting design principles to create a personalized home environment that reflects the homeowner’s personality and creates daily moments of wonder. The installation demonstrates how commercial sign-making techniques can be adapted for residential applications.
Design Concept
The starry ceiling concept uses a fiber optic lighting system arranged in custom constellation patterns that hold personal meaning for the homeowner—including significant dates, astrological signs, and family member birth constellations. The design considers the room’s use patterns, with the lighting system offering multiple modes from a subtle nightlight effect to a full constellation display. Supporting wall elements include a custom LED neon sign with an inspirational word or phrase, rendered in a flowing script typeface that adds personality to the space.
The color palette is soft and restful: deep indigo ceiling, warm white light points, and subtle gold accents in the wall sign elements. The overall design creates a sense of expanded space, making the room feel larger and more connected to the night sky.
Material & Fabrication
The fiber optic ceiling installation uses a professional-grade constellation system with hundreds of individual fiber strands. The ceiling surface receives a dark matte treatment to maximize contrast with the light points. The wall-mounted neon sign uses LED neon flex in warm white, mounted on a clear acrylic backing with brushed aluminum standoffs that create a floating appearance.
All electrical components are low-voltage with appropriate residential safety certifications. The control system includes a smartphone app for easy mode switching and scheduling. The LED components are rated for extended operation with minimal maintenance requirements.
