Pixel and Circuit a premium consumer electronics store in San Francisco SoMa tech corridor needed a sign that felt like the future. White channel letters with blue LED halo glow on a charcoal facade — clean, precise, unmistakably tech.
Project Background
Pixel and Circuit opened in San Francisco South of Market district — the heart of the city tech ecosystem. The founder a former Apple Store lead wanted signage that celebrated technology without feeling cold.
Design Concept and Branding
White acrylic channel letters with a blue LED halo backlight against dark charcoal facade. The dot over the “i” in “Pixel” is replaced with a small circular LED pulsing at 45 beats per minute — suggesting a circuit heartbeat.
Material Selection and Fabrication
Channel letters are thick, fabricated from clear acrylic with white diffusion faces and aluminum return. Each letter houses evenly-spaced blue LEDs. Backing plate is brushed aluminum with satin anodized finish. The pulsing i uses a programmable LED with a microcontroller in a weatherproof box.
Installation Process
Aluminum backing plate first, then individual letter wiring through concealed conduit. The animated i required an additional low-voltage line. A dusk sensor activates the halo with a 30-minute fade-in rather than abrupt switch-on.
Results and Impact
Foot traffic is 45 percent higher than the previous tenant. The pulsing i has become a local curiosity. Thirty percent of first-time customers mention the sign as their reason for entering.
