This case study presents the retro mid-century neon signage design for “The Palms Motor Hotel”, a nostalgic roadside establishment. The design revives mid-century American motel aesthetics with a contemporary execution, creating a storefront sign that captures the golden era of highway travel while meeting modern durability and visibility standards.
Design Concept
The signage concept draws from classic 1950s and 1960s roadside architecture, featuring bold geometric forms, vintage-inspired typography, and warm neon glow. The design embraces the iconic “Googie” architectural influence with angled elements, starburst motifs, and sweeping curves that evoke a sense of movement and arrival. The color palette combines vibrant retro tones—turquoise, coral pink, and warm amber—against a clean backdrop, ensuring the sign reads as both nostalgic and freshly modern.
The primary signage features the establishment name in a custom retro-style typeface with exaggerated serifs and generous letter spacing, reminiscent of classic motel signs along historic Route 66. Supporting text highlights key amenities, creating visual hierarchy that guides the viewer’s eye from the brand name to supporting information.
Material & Fabrication
The sign structure is fabricated from powder-coated aluminum in a period-appropriate pastel hue, with internally illuminated channels housing custom-bent neon tubing. The neon is handcrafted in warm amber and cool turquoise, creating the characteristic glow that defines mid-century roadside signage. Secondary acrylic panels with translucent vinyl graphics provide additional illuminated messaging areas. All components are rated for outdoor durability with weather-sealed electrical connections and UV-stable materials.
The sign is mounted on a powder-coated steel pole structure, elevating it above the roofline for maximum visibility from approaching traffic. Integrated LED accent lighting supplements the neon during operational hours, reducing energy consumption while maintaining the signature warm ambiance.
Installation Results
The completed installation successfully resurrects the golden age of roadside signage for a new generation. The sign serves as a landmark for the motor hotel, attracting guests with its warm nostalgic glow while reinforcing the property’s retro-themed hospitality experience. The design balances authentic period details with modern construction standards, resulting in a storefront sign that performs reliably while delivering the emotional appeal of classic Americana.
