Starting a pet grooming and boarding business. I want a storefront sign that attracts pet owners but I’m worried about materials — our space gets humid from the grooming area and we’re in a hot climate. What sign type holds up best for a pet business? Also, should I use animal graphics on the sign or keep it clean/modern?

Arizona sign installer here. Humidity + heat is a killer for certain materials. Here’s what I’d recommend for a pet grooming business:
DO use: Aluminum composite panel with direct UV print and a anti-graffiti laminate. The print is fused into the coating, so humidity won’t delaminate it like vinyl wrap. For dimensional letters, use painted HDU (high-density urethane) — it’s moisture-resistant and won’t rot like wood or corrode like untreated metal.
DON’T use: Standard vinyl lettering on acrylic. In a humid environment with cleaning chemicals (bleach, enzymatic cleaners), the adhesive fails in 12-18 months. Also avoid raw steel or iron — pet cleaning chemicals accelerate rust.
Budget around $1,500-2,500 for a durable HDU sign with direct-print panel and dimensional letters. It’ll last 8-10 years with minimal maintenance.

I own a pet grooming salon and went through this last year. I decided on a clean, modern look — a white backlit acrylic panel with the business name in dimensional wooden-finish letters (actually HDU painted to look like birch wood). It’s professional enough for the medical-minded pet owners (veterinary referrals) but warm enough for the “my dog is my child” crowd.

Important detail nobody mentioned: cleanability. Pet grooming businesses have a lot of airborne hair, dander, and cleaning chemical residue. Your sign will need washing. Make sure whatever material you choose can handle being wiped down with mild detergent:

As a customer, what makes me trust a pet grooming place is seeing their sign look well-maintained. If your sign is faded or peeling, I assume your facility is also not well-maintained. Whatever you spend, get something that will still look good in year 5. A clean, crisp sign says “we care about details” — which is exactly what I want in someone handling my dog.

One thing I learned: add a small open flag or A-frame sign on the sidewalk. Pet owners walking their dogs decide spontaneously to stop for nail trims or baths. The sidewalk sign catches the “oh I’m right here” impulse better than a storefront sign that’s above eye level. Cost us $200 and it brings in 5-10 walk-ins per week.
